Summer Mountain Refuges

Saint-Martin-de-Belleville isn’t just about dreamy ski runs and beautiful chalets, it’s also home to some incredible mountain refuges that offer a completely different side of alpine life.

This summer, if you’re up for a little adventure, love the idea of switching off and soaking up nature, these tucked-away spots are perfect for discovering the real heart of the mountains. Think cosy hideaways, hearty local food, and views you’ll soak up in the sun.

Mountain refuges offer something truly special: a glimpse into traditional alpine life and the chance to immerse yourself in nature like never before. These rustic yet welcoming lodges are dotted along walking trails and high-altitude paths, offering hikers and mountain lovers a place to rest, refuel and soak in the spectacular scenery.

Originally built to provide shelter for shepherds, mountaineers and explorers, refuges have a long-standing history in alpine culture. Today, they continue to serve as respite for those exploring the mountains on foot. Run by friendly local hosts, most refuges offer hearty home-cooked meals, simple but comfortable beds and an atmosphere that brings their guests together.

Lake Lou Refuge

Placed at an altitude of 2,035 meters, the Lake Lou Refuge offers a perfect mix of luxury and rustic beauty. Open during both summer and winter, guests can enjoy traditional Savoyard cuisine and warm hospitality.

Lake Lou Refuge offers shared dormitory-style sleeping arrangements with a total of 33 beds across five rooms:
– 1 dormitory for 5 guests
– 2 dormitories for 6 guests
– 2 dormitories for 8 guests

You’ll need to bring a sleeping bag, but don’t worry, blankets and pillows are provided to ensure a cosy night’s sleep after a day on the trails.

Hot showers are available for €3, just ask their team. Everything is simple and fuss-free, designed to help you switch off and soak up the scenery.


Evenings are all about coming together around the dinner table, with dinner served at 7:00 pm sharp. Breakfast follows from 7:00 am to 8:30 am, giving you plenty of time to hit the trails. And if you’re planning a big day out, you can also pre-order a picnic lunch the evening before.

Trait d'Union Refuge

Easily accessible year-round, the Trait d'Union Refuge is a peaceful haven. Expect a warm welcome and a menu of simple, home-cooked dishes, all served with sweeping panoramic views. It’s peaceful, authentic, and just what you need after a morning exploring the mountains. Guests can unwind in the on-site Norwegian bath or sauna, making it an ideal spot for relaxation amidst nature and endless Marmot spotting.

Evenings at the refuge are wonderfully serene. You’ll begin with an apéritif in the summer lounge, facing the setting sun, the perfect spot to unwind after a day outdoors.

Dinner follows with hearty mountain fare, bubbling Savoyard fondue or a rustic winegrower’s version, finished off with homemade dessert. It’s relaxed, delicious and full of local charm.

The refuge offers a few charming and comfortable rooms, each with its own character:

Ninou’s Room | A snug space for two, featuring a comfortable double bed.

Galta Room | Ideal for friends or small families, this room sleeps two and can be arranged with either two single beds or one double, depending on your preference.

Croé Room | A versatile option for groups or families of up to four. It includes four single beds, with two tucked away on the mezzanine. Double bed configurations are available here too, for a more tailored set-up.

Plan Lombardie Refuge

A short 30 to 40-minute walk near Saint-Jean-de-Belleville leads to the Plan Lombardie Refuge. This timeless setting invites visitors to enjoy a meal or overnight stay, embracing the simplicity and generosity that characterize the region's hospitality.

The refuge sleeps up to 23 guests, divided across five cosy rooms with 3 to 6 beds each. Every bed is made up for you with a fitted sheet, duvet, and pillow, so you can travel light and sleep soundly. Upstairs, you’ll find clean, modern bathrooms with sinks, toilets, and hot showers, all included in your stay.

For hygiene and comfort, guests are kindly asked to bring their own sleeping bag. If needed, sleeping bags can be rented at the refuge for €3. Please note that towels are not provided, so be sure to pack your own.

At this mountain hideaway, mealtimes are all about simplicity, warmth, and flavour. Enjoy a choice of 1–2 daily specials (often comforting meat dishes or gratins) and fresh, filling salads for your lunch time meal. Homemade desserts and rustic fruit pies are served all day, ideal for a mid-hike treat. And when it comes to dinnertime, each evening brings a set menu featuring a starter or soup, a generous main course, and a sweet ending.

Gittamelon Refuge

Located in the quaint mountain village of Vallée des Encombres, the Gittamelon Refuge offers a welcoming atmosphere. Surrounded by majestic natural beauty. It's the perfect stop after a day of hiking to savour Savoie specialties and rest in a serene environment.

Refuge Gittamelon offers 18 sleeping places, including a dormitory with three cosy 4-person alcove-style “boxes" and an additional six beds thoughtfully arranged throughout the room.

Mealtimes at Gittamelon are all about generous, seasonal dishes served with care. From hearty plates to light salads and homemade desserts, the food here is crafted for tired legs and hungry bellies. So, if you're joining for lunch or settling in for a cosy dinner, you’ll feel right at home.
